about

It’s a Whoop Jamboree!
The sophomore effort by the Secret Six There’s Something In My Eye And It’s You! revives the best aspects of unspoiled New Orleans music with collective improvisation. A distinctive texture of early jazz from New Orleans which Louis Armstrong said derived from the old sanctified churches. A heterophony of call and response phrases that create a musical world that does not depend on conventional harmony. The collective improvisation balances total order and total chaos with uncompromising intensity.
During his rendition of Stranger on the shore, James Evans carries the melody as if he is leading a noble procession. He wails and screams on Smackin’ The Sax and proves he’s badger tough and raccoon smart as he leads us into vibrant instrumental interludes shifting in and out of double time with the ease of a top class distance runner changing pace. Though Jory Woodis may not have been born in New Orleans it sounds like he got there as quickly as he could. On Froggie Moore Rag his horn soars like a gull as he creates a series of “somebody put a bee in my bonnet” norm rattling breaks. On their clarinet duet Jory and James attempt to burn down the bayou with their reverse Houdini rendition of East Coast Trot. Russell Ramirez holds us all in the light as he adds melodic curves, trills and triplets over a beautifully simplistic Magic Is The Moonlight and his high octane breaks drive the bear with dramatic impetus on Wild Man Blues. Ay Chihuahua! Satoru Ohashi tears through Ride Red Ride and creates a series of rhythmically daring ideas with his confident playing, sure grasp of rhythm and commitment to a memorable phrase as he shows a man of his stamp can never be licked. When Reid Poole plays Cornet Chop Suey there is no doubt that deep within him burns a fire that always ignites his phrases. Great playing falls thick and fast as Reid and Satoru’s stop time chorus comes through loud and clear. On Rose of the Rio Grande Hunter Burgamy’s vocal chorus and banjo work weave a brocade of sounds embossing an element of drama onto every motif. Hunter effectively combines scorching timber and ingenious timing throughout. John Joyce and Mike Voelker establish a buoyant rhythm section on Dippermouth Blues and they each play a sterling part of a dramatic rhythm team. They provide the transportation while everything floats on their beat. This new album bucks like a bronco on a red ant hill. It’s good old fashioned fun, so turn loose the rooster and hold the hen, get a copy and start syncopation’ and celebratin’ today!
